When a tank gives out, you're choosing the heater you'll shower with every day for years, so the swap should be quick and the choice should be right. When Jerry McLaughlin's heater failed, Andrew worked with the supplier to extend the warranty past the standard five years, and the replacement cost nothing but installation.
Not every water heater that acts up needs replacing, and a plumber paid on commission has little reason to tell you that. Teal's plumbers work hourly, so you hear honestly whether a part will carry your heater a few more years. When an out-of-state owner's vacation home lost hot water, Teal fixed it fast and checked back days later to be sure it held.
Before a tankless unit goes on the wall, Andrew looks at the gas line that will feed it and can run a dedicated line straight to the heater. Rinnai is his first pick, with Navien as the backup when a model is hard to get. You get endless hot water from a plumber who has installed these many times over.
Most tankless trouble starts small, like debris in the fan, something Andrew says these units are known for. Left alone, a small problem turns into a heater that cuts out mid-shower or flashes an error code. Teal services and repairs gas and electric tankless units so a pricey heater keeps running the way it did the first week.
Waiting at the far sink for the water to finally run hot is the most common letdown after switching to tankless. A recirculation system keeps hot water moving to your farthest fixture, often with just a bypass valve under that fixture and no new lines to run. It works with tank heaters too, and Andrew says it pays off down the road if you ever sell.
A gas water heater ties into your gas piping as well as your water lines, so it belongs with a plumber certified for gas work, not just water. Andrew holds gas certifications in four types and installs both tank and tankless gas heaters. Before the new heater goes in, he checks the line feeding it, so a brand-new heater isn't hooked to a worn-out pipe.
The price you're quoted for an electric water heater is the price you pay, even when the old tank has to fight its way out. June Harvey's heater sat under her house in a partial basement, and Andrew took the door off to get the old one out and the new one in, with no extras on the bill. Teal also installs electric tankless units for homes without gas.
Flushing a tank clears out the sediment that settles at the bottom and makes a heater work harder than it should.
